SCAMPER is a checklist of seven different ways to think about a problem or product. By systematically applying these action verbs—Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to another use, Eliminate, and Reverse—you can transform an existing concept into something revolutionary.
The Multi-Tool of Innovation
Innovation doesn’t always mean starting from scratch. Often, it means taking what exists and “SCAMPER-ing” it.
Define Your Subject
Identify the product, service, or process you want to improve.
Example: A standard ballpoint pen.
Apply the SCAMPER Checklist
Go through each letter and ask: “How can I change the pen using this verb?”
- Substitute: Use conductive ink instead of regular ink (to draw circuits).
- Combine: Add a laser pointer or a USB drive to the top.
- Adapt: Use medical-grade materials to make it hygienic for hospitals.
- Modify: Make it tiny enough to fit in a wallet (Minify) or extra-thick for better grip (Magnify).
- Put to another use: Use the pen casing as a self-defense tool.
- Eliminate: Remove the cap and use a magnetic retractable tip.
- Reverse: Design it for non-dominant hands or for assembly by the user.
Evaluate and Refine
Which of these changes actually adds value? Pick the best 1-2 ideas to develop.
Practice
Subject: “The Cardboard Box.”
- Put to another use: A child’s spaceship or a cat’s fort.
- Combine: Add waterproof lining to make it a temporary cooler.
- Eliminate: Remove the flaps and use a sliding lid.
